Patrick is an Entrepreneur and a Venture Capital investor. He has studied and worked in France, the USA, and China. He complements a sound scientific background and curiosity for technology with a large business experience and a passion for innovation.
Dr. Berbon is co-founder and Managing Partner at China Materialia (CM), an Open Innovation advisory firm and Venture Capital (VC) fund focused on Innovation and China. CM runs two Chinese VC funds, with investors such as Shanghai Municipal government, Samsung, SABIC, Baosteel, and Bohai steel. As part of China Materialia Venture Capital fund I, Patrick is on the board of Zipline Medical, a California-based company inventor and distributor of the thinnest-scar process for wound closure after surgery, Camray, a revolutionary cold-cathode X-ray tube company based on carbon nanotubes, Octadem, a portable spectrometer company using LED light for water and medical applications, Thingple, a leader in RFID solutions for manufacturing and logistics, and Wesmart, an energy efficiency company building solutions around user engagement.
Patrick also invested personally in a variety of businesses, such as Original Life, a modern agriculture company working on aquaponics, Aowen, a distributor of medical diagnostic and gene splicing equipment to universities and laboratories, Seeder, a leader in hassle-free access to photovoltaic energy in China, Huanwei Group, a Europe-China exclusive investment bank, and Specifiko, a ground-breaking language-learning technology for health-care professionals.
Dr. Berbon teaches innovation at UTSEUS, a joint program between University of Technology system in France and Shanghai University. He also teaches Venture Capital at the EM Lyon Shanghai campus at East China Normal University.
Patrick worked as a R&Ｄ scientist at Rockwell Science Center and founded California Nanotechnologies, a materials science company now traded on the Toronto Venture Exchange, as a spin-off from the Science Center.
He holds a BS and MS degree from Ecole Centrale in Lyon and Tsinghua University in Beijing, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Patrick grew up in Avignon, France.
